Engaging our world

In Scripture, we read that “faith without works is dead.”  Although we love to worship, to be with our church family, to study and learn together, we know that our faith requires us to leave the building.  God has given us a beautiful world with wonderful people, but brokenness and division plague us as well.  There are areas of our world hungry for healing, peace and reconciliation.  We are also hungry to be in service.  We know when we go out to serve others, we become their guests, welcomed graciously into their lives.  When we serve, we very often are the ones who benefit and grow.  Works of service, charity and justice are an integral part of our faith.

Some have described Ridgefield as a modern-day Mayberry.  Even in our quiet town, however, there is need for the love of Jesus.  We are active in our town in several ways:

·         We offer a bi-weekly Bible study and activity at The Living Center, a residential mental health facility, and offer weekly transportation           to worship.

·         We fill and distribute 20 back packs with food in our local elementary schools, so children who rely on school breakfast and lunch                won’t go hungry on the weekends.

·         We host a living nativity during the December Hometown Celebration where people can have their picture taken in the manger scene           with baby Jesus.

·         We lead monthly worship at Friends of the Carpenter, a homeless day shelter in Vancouver, WA.

In July 2015, our youth group traveled to Chiloquin, Oregon to make home repairs in a Native American community through Sierra Service Project.  (link to sierraserviceproject.org).  Our youth discovered that, as children of God, they are empowered to make a difference in the world, to bridge divisions, and to be part of a movement that builds people up instead of tearing them down.  We’re looking forward to what summer 2016 will bring!

If you would like to be a positive force in our community and world, the faith community at Ridgefield United Methodist Church can help you find your place.  Come join us!
